Cedar Key Adventure celebrates its Railroad History

March 19, 2013

Last Friday, ten of our alumni were treated to an amazing multimedia experience on the railroad berm in Cedar Key. This berm is left from the railroad that was used until the 1930’s. Carol and Lois were our charming hostesses. They set up a display with flowers, brochures from the C K Historical Museum, and sound effects – recorded trains and whistles. These remarkable ladies come up with such great ideas!

We each worked along the railroad trail, on the newly-constructed docks, and at picnic tables. Below, peek at the pictures of our review and check out the journey daybook pages on their own page.

Icon Writing Retreat – a 2000 year-old Tradition

February 28, 2013

Recently, Mary, one of our board members, alerted us to this wonderful upcoming opportunity that seems to fit very well into our contemplative focus – 05

October 13-18, 2013, Marywood Retreat Center
Jacksonville, Florida
Icons are windows on a world that calls us to be still and rest in a place of thankfulness with God. Traditional icon writing is an ancient spiritual practice; an extraordinary prayer.
This retreat is for all skill levels, absolutely no experience necessary.

Mary Jane Miller, a full-time artist for over 30 years, currently lives in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where she paints and teaches the lost art of Icon writing as a prayer form. Her understanding of spiritual symbology and her skill result in an experience that is deeply meditative as well as artistic. She teaches using traditional medium of egg tempera and gold leaf. www.sanmiguelicons.com

Sandy Reimer, an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, has over thirty years of experience in spiritual direction and discernment, contemplative prayer and leadership of small groups and retreats. Recently retired, she is now in private practice as a spiritual director in Gainesville, Florida. Her deep open spirituality and her feminist perspective guide her work. Sandy will offer opportunities for inclusive spiritual practice and reflection.

Marywood Retreat and Conference Center rests on the St. John’s River just minutes from Jacksonville and St.Augustine, Florida. Their 100 acres of beautiful tranquility, live oak trees, nature trails, dock on the river, labyrinth and chapel create an ideal setting for this retreat. Executive Chef Alan Mc Cully will prepare delicious and healthy buffet meals.
www.marywoodcenter.org

Retreat begins at 4:30 PM on Sunday, October 13. There will be painting sessions and guided spiritual reflection daily. The retreat will end on Friday, October 18, 2013 at 3PM. Each participant will have a finished icon on completion of this retreat.
Limited to 18 participants.

Imagine a Railroad to Cedar Key

February 23, 2013

The next Journey Daybook Adventure will be in Cedar Key on Saturday, March 16th at 10:00am when we will visit the old remaining cross Florida Railroad berm. This historical site is lovely and secluded, hidden in an extensive mangrove bayou, but close to the necessities. You will need to bring: a chair, lunch, hat and sunscreen—and your journey daybook kit. Drinks and a sweet will be provided. We can paint, lunch and share pages within the green sanctuary. The first train arrived in Cedar Key in March 1861, the last in 1932. Come and imagine!!

February Adventure at the Harn

February 20, 2013

Review

Barbara hosted a surprisingly lovely Adventure last Saturday at the Harn Museum. The weather was cold and cloudy. So, our expert forecaster/president changed the venue from Kanapaha Gardens to this warm, comfortable space with a lovely cafe in which we shared our lunch. Four of us each worked in separate parts of the museum, focusing on some specific works of art. All of us wrote. All of us drew. Some of us painted.

Our review session was especially rich since we each shared deeply about our work. This sharing spawned questions and further study. E-mails about the experience were still flying back and forth as late as Sunday afternoon.

Notice the photos thoughtful photos of Mary and Barbara as we reviewed our work.

January 26 Kahapaha Adventure

January 28, 2013

Kanapaha6Under the huge, gnarled canopy of an ancient live oak tree, 18 JDB alumni (a record number!) celebrated ourselves and our work by making pages, feasting, and reviewing our personal pages. Kanapaha Gardens is so large and rich that it encouraged each of us to work in our own solitary, contemplative spaces, and the results were reflective of our own, individual practices. Enjoy some photos from this stunning day and look at the “Journey Daybooks” menu page to see the individual pages of some our alums made on Saturday.
