Mary Anna’s Pilgrimage to Southeast Asia

May 21, 2012

Mary Anna and Leonard spent most of March making an amazing journey throughout Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia – a journey was often privately led and hosted by local families where they really got to interact with the people and feel the feelings that these Southeast Asians have experienced for at least the past 50 years. Throughout their journey, Leonard photographed and Mary Anna made journey daybook pages which reveal her experiences and feelings surrounding their amazing trip. The first image is a map showing some of the geography of the region and their route.

Mary Anna shared her story with me last month when she came for a board meeting and stayed with me here in Cedar Key. To see a selection of the remaining journey daybook pages, please click on the Notes and Journey Daybook Pages page.

World Wide Sketchbooks

May 15, 2012

At the beginning of 2011 several Journey Daybook alumni completed a sketchbook that was exhibited world wide as part of the International Sketchbook Project. Back then and now, we believe that the journey daybook practice is a way of connecting both new and familiar people in ways that can promote peace.

This morning a friend sent me this link to a NYT article on . Thank you, Jean!

Busy Weekend in Cedar Key

May 06, 2012

Traditionally, the first weekend of May has been set aside for a small boat meet here. Small, often hand-made, often wood boats come with their owners, and sometimes builders, to sail and paddle around our lovely island. People congregate at Atsena Otie, a small island off Cedar Key. This is always a beautiful sight for observers, and, for the third year, Journey Daybook alums have gathered here for an Adventure. This Adventure was beautifully hosted by Carol, a Cedar Key resident, who treated us to kayaks, golf cart rides, sodas, and a spectacularly cool site. What an extraordinary experience we had! I have assembled a few photos that tell a bit of the story for those of you who follow our activities. As always, check the “Notes and Journey Daybook Pages” page to see some of the wonderful pages that were made by the 7 participants who enjoyed this beautiful day.

Cinda’s Maine Project

April 20, 2012

Many of us are most excited when we either work with children or plan this work. One of our alums from Sarasota recently wrote me that she is currently doing background work for a summer project that she will do with kids in Maine this summer. As I understand it, she will be teaching nature journaling, focusing on familiar local birds. This is some of the prep work that she has been doing while she has been at her home on Longboat Key this winter. Wonderful and inspiring work, Cinda! The children are so fortunate to have you!

Micanopy encore

April 17, 2012

For our April Adventure the Journey Daybook alums traveled to Micanopy again. Some of us had missed the first trip in March, so Barbara agreed to hostess this return trip. I have posted my own trip report and some images on my own blog. Take a look and look for more images of other journey daybook artists on the “Notes and Journey Daybook pages” page.

More Details about the Alumni Adventure in Micanopy

March 08, 2012

A letter from Barbara –

Dear friends,
When I sent out the invitation for our February adventure at the University Gardens, I included a save-the-date announcement about our March adventure in Micanopy—which several of you have already indicated you would attend.  Here are the details about that adventure in Micanopy on Saturday, March 17th, hosted by Jean Michelson:
We will meet at 10:00am in the gazebo just west of the  Herlong Mansion B & B on 1st Street (the main street of Micanopy with all the shops etc.)  at 10:00am.  There is ample street parking on 1st Street, including right in front of the gazebo.  If you enter Micanopy from Rte. 441, the gazebo will be on your right; if you wind you way into Micanopy from I-75, it will of course be on your left!
After we’ve all gathered, we’ll head off to explore and work on our pages.  Just bring your basic journey daybook materials including sunscreen,  a hat and  perhaps a folding stool or chair.  There are many benches where you can sit and sketch/paint, both under the eaves by various shops and in the grassy median.  If you think you’ll want to go a little further afield into the nearby picturesque residential areas, you will want a chair of some sort.
At noon, we’ll reconvene at the gazebo to eat our lunches and review our pages.  You can pack a lunch or pick up a sandwich or salad to go at one of the casual restaurants—if you choose the latter option, please order it enough ahead of time to be back at the gazebo at noon.
We’ll We should finish up around 1:30pm.  This will allow time for you to head off to other commitments or to linger in Micanopy for a while to visit the interesting shops, indulge in an ice cream etc.

Please RSVP directly to Jean if you plan to participate in this adventure.  Jean’s contact info is:  jeanmichelson@usa.net (email) or (352)338-4594 (cell).

I’m wishing all of you a splendid International Women’s Day today—and looking forward to our time together on the 17th.
Peace,
Barbara
PS  Carpooling is always encouraged!

Alumni Adventure – Saturday March 17

March 05, 2012

Today – a spectacular day in these parts – drew Susan and Barbara to Micanopy to scope out the site of our next Adventure – that will happen in just a few weeks. I am very excited, especially now that I have seen the photos that Susan made this afternoon. I hope that these will also wet your interest.

Susan writes: “The plan is to meet at the gazebo which is on the right as you enter town, just past the Herlong Mansion (to the right) and next to the blue historical Micanopy sign.  There are parking spaces right next to the small park that surrounds the gazebo.  This promises to be a great adventure – everywhere you look there is something more picturesque than the last spot”

More specific details to follow . . . .

January Introductory Retreat – Camp Weed

January 30, 2012

Sixteen of us (the most participants ever!) had a pretty amazing two-day experience this weekend up near Live Oak at the Cerveny Conference Center. The staff now treat us like “regulars” because we have used this location for the past 4 retreat gatherings. The location is spectacular. The facilities are beautifully organized, and the food is tasty. The four of us who facilitate the retreat have developed “a system,” which makes setting up and leaving Camp Weed easier and easier.

Below, you can see Susan and Joye during our closing review. Go to the Notes and Journey Daybook Pages page to see the journey daybook pages that were produced over the weekend.
