Cool Journal Page
July 16, 2013
This page was posted tonight on Facebook by my friend, Sandy Bell, who lives near Zion National Park in Springdale, Utah. Sandy and I belong to a group of journal keepers which includes mostly women naturalists working in the far western states. Several of us we had a very memorable and lovely gathering that was hosted by Sandy at Zion.
Sandy and I both belong to a group of journal keepers that gather each summer or early fall. You can read more about Sandy by going to her website

Floating down the Ichetucknee this Friday?
Several of us will be participating on our annual JDB Adventure at the Ichetucknee this Friday. Below are the instructions that Barbara sent to everyone a few weeks ago. Read and respond to Patty if you plan to go.
The planned adventure for August is our annual float trip down the Ichetucknee Springs River on Friday July 19th. If you have never done this trip before it is a peaceful, awe inspiring trip on tubes, small rubber boats or rafts that can last up to 3.5 hours. Click on the link below to learn more about this state park and the float trips and to get directions to the North Entrance of the park.
http://www.floridastateparks.org/ichetuckneesprings/default.cfm
If you are interested in canoeing or kayaking, the site states that the fee is also $5.00 and that you must yield right-of-way to tubers.
Arriving at the river early is important for two reasons: only a certain number of people are allowed on the river each day; and getting off the river by mid-day is good because there are often thunderstorms in the afternoon. We should plan to meet at the parking lot of the North Entrance to the park at 8:30 am with tubes already rented. The vehicles have to be moved to the South Entrance with only the driver allowed to ride the shuttle bus back to the North Entrance where we begin the float. It can take from 20 to 40 minutes for the drivers to drop cars off and catch the shuttle back. The rest of us can draw while waiting.
No food or drink is allowed on the river. To draw on the river I bring a small bag I can tie on my tube with a small amount of paper in a ziploc bag, pencil, pens, brush and a cheap watercolor set. If you drop something in the river do not plan on getting it back! You may also want to include sunscreen and mosquito repellent. Once we’re on the river, mosquitos don’t seem to be a problem but we’re likely to encounter some while we wait in the park for the drivers to return.
The cost is $5.00 per person to go on the float trip plus another $5 or so to rent a tube at one of the many places on the way to the park. Either bring a picnic lunch, which you will leave in the car, or have money to buy food from the concession stand at the South Entrance. We have a couple of options for when we eat lunch: we can eat along the way by getting off the river at the ramp at the South Entrance and then re-enter the river to float the rest of the way; or, we can float all the way down, ride the tram back up to the South Entrance and then eat lunch.
If it is raining in the morning, our back-up plan is to meet at the Harn at 11:00 am in the lobby. For current exhibits you may go to their site http://www.harn.ufl.edu/index.php. The Camellia Court Cafe is on site and offers a nice menu for lunch.
Please let me know if you plan to participate in this adventure or if you have any questions. I hope to see you on the river.

Attempting to Blog from my I Pad
June 26, 2013
Last week when I was in Idaho, several people sent me photos and scans of their journey daybook pages made at Pam Feaster’s home at the beginning of the month. Unfortunately, I was not able to post these images. Now, I am restudying the process. I would be most grateful for any help that you might give me if you are familiar with using the WordPress app on the I Pad.
Now – here is Julanne’s clear, beautiful page made at Pam Feaster’s home –

A Magical Adventure at Pam’s Beautiful Home on Newnan’s Lake
June 08, 2013
What a treat we had today when we gathered at Pam’s beautiful home with its solitude and gardens. This was the perfect place for a June Adventure! Twelve of us scatteredacross the property, under the porches, and by the pool, enjoying this exquisite setting. We made pages reflective of our very different perspectives and visions. I especially look forward to posting the pages in the Journey Daybook page. (Please send them quickly so that I can post them soon. Troid and Carol sent me her pages this afternoon and were the first ones!) Please look for them. For lunch, we each brought something to share. This “stone salad” was Pam’s brilliant idea that made much more tangible the sharing that we all do as part of the Journey Daybook process. Food, as our work, is sacred. It was beautiful to share it together today.

Teaching Drawing
May 31, 2013
Danny Gregory has been on our minds recently. Susan and I are working on the Drawing Unit for the JDB curriculum. Carol, Lois, and I are working on Painting. We have used Danny’s work in discussions of both units. Then, just this morning, Debbie sent me this link to a video that Danny has distributed on his blog. Please take a look.

Busy . Busy . Busy
May 29, 2013
Several of us are going on personal trips this summer – to New York, Maine, the Rocky Mountains, Montreal and Quebec City, to name just a few planned journeys. Of course, we will be making journey daybook pages during these times. Some of us will stay at home, making and planning destinations of the spirit. Many of us are practicing and honing our drawing, painting, collage, design, and writing skills right now. Please check out the Journey Daybook page and take a look at what we are doing!

June Adventure at Newnan’s Lake
May 14, 2013
On Saturday, June 8, JDB alums are invited to an outdoor/indoor adventure at Pam Feaster’s home on Newnan’s Lake on the eastern edge of Gainesville. The area is wild and we have lots of birds, deer, turkeys and other critters which you may see that day.
Plan to arrive at 10 AM. In addition to your usual gear (Journey Daybook kit, hat, sunscreen) you can bring your swimsuit if you would like to cool off in the pool. The day will most likely be pretty warm. There are lots of chairs and places to sit in the yard, by the lake or in the house.
Let’s do a “Stone Salad” for our lunch. Remember the folk tale “Stone Soup”? In some regions it was axe or nail soup, but the idea is: Pam will have greens (“hopefully from my garden if the bugs leave them alone”) and each of you should bring an ingredient that you like in salad which we will put together and see what we create! There will be bowls for the ingredients so you can create your own salad– you won’t have to add any thing you don’t like. Pam will also have salad dressings, drinks and dessert. What a bonanza for us!
Address is: 1721 NE 75th Street Gainesville
Directions: From Gainesville go East on E. University Avenue /SR 26 toward Melrose. Stay on SR 26 when it veers to the left, splitting off from E. Univ Av/CR 329B. Turn right 1.6 miles from that split at the first street sign you see (NE19th Avenue). (You can see a blinking yellow light about 1/2 mile ahead.) NE 19th Av is a bumpy, lime rock road. Follow “FEASTER” signs 4/10 mi. to my house on the left with a black iron fence.
Please call Pam if you need more directions or have trouble finding the place. It’s only 6 miles from UF.
Please RSVP directly to Pam. See you on June 8th!

Annual Small Boat Adventure in Cedar Key
April 25, 2013
Check out the Alumni Adventures and Journey Daybook pages to see more!
All alums are invited to Cedar Key for the Small Boat Meet on Saturday, May 4. We will meet at the City’s Pocket Park at the far western end of 4th Street at 10 AM. (This is the same place we have met in previous years.) We will spread out around town to make journey daybook pages for about two hours. At 1 PM we will meet at Robin Gillies house at 742 Second Street (just up the hill from my house) where we will enjoy the bag lunches that we will each bring along. After lunch, we will have our review in the shade at Robin’s house, which has lovely porches that catch spring breezes. Our Adventure will formally end at 2 PM; although several of us will be staying for a Board Meeting at my house at 2:30 PM.
You may participate in the Small Boat meet by bringing your own kayak or by borrowing or renting one. If you want to borrow a kayak, please let me know when you RSVP. Robin’s house has a lovely swimming pool that she has generously offered for our use, and the view from Robin’s house is breathtaking! You may choose to rest or draw here. So, there are several possible activities for this popular Saturday Journey Daybook Adventure. Please RSVP to Peggy directly at 342.543.6127 or 352.278.6127 or by e-mail at Journeyday@AOL.com.

Networking with other Plein Air Groups
April 03, 2013
I have spent some time this afternoon perusing the Internet, relooking at sites that I haven’t visited in a long time. Four of these sites may be of special interest to Journey Daybook alumni. Urban Sketchers is an International group of artists, who, like us, draw and paint plein air as they travel through life. Individually, we could certainly join this group. The site is huge. There are announcements of workshops, sketchcrawls (when group members get together at the same time to draw), and exhibits. Take a look. You may find lots of inspiration. Look for the next sketchcrawl. There should be 4 of them in 2013. Mary Anna has participated with Sketchcrawl journal keepers in past years.
The second group of sites are of plein air painters, and there are several sites that may be of interest. Membership in these groups is for painters (and we are painters!,) who may work in watercolor, oil, or acrylic. The sites have announcements of “paint-outs” when artists meet together, like “sketch crawls” to work. I have posted links to three of these sites – one to which I belong – Plein Air Florida, a large national group – Plein Air Painters of America, and an international group – International Plein Air Painters Worldwide. Susan recently studied in Sarasota with J. R. Baldini, who is a founding member of this last group. I hope that you enjoy exploring all these sites. May they provide inspiration to you as they did to me this afternoon.
And . . . You might think about applying to be part of a Paint Out to celebrate International Paint-Out Day in Mendocino California September 9 -14, 2013. Follow this link!
And, again . . . My last note – The 39th International Sketch Crawl Day is April 13 – the very day of our JDB Adventure at the Haile Farmers’ Market with Jean as hostess! Let’s make a commitment to copy our individual pages and post them to this site and the Global Urban Sketchers Page on Facebook. I can help with this; although, unfortunately, I won’t be at Haile on the 13th.
